Swing Trading Stock Market Outlook for This Week - Trade That Swing (2024)

Here is my stock market outlook for the week of January 22, 2024. As a swing trader, each week I do a stock market outlook to determine if I’ll be placing new trades during the week or not. The stock market outlook gives me a sense of market health, and thus how much or little of my capital I want to deploy.

Heading into the week of January 22, market conditions are good. I am deploying my capital on long trades.

I look at 4 different US indices because they each tell a different story about overall stock market health. The stock market is healthiest—and swing trading stocks on the long side is most profitable—when all these indexes are in uptrends. Here’s what each of the 4 indices represents:

The Canadian index tracks large-cap Canadian stocks.

From aprice action perspective, the Nasdaq 100 and S&P 500 are resuming the uptrend. NYSE Composite, Russell 2000, and Canadian index are in pullbacks within longer-term uptrends. There is a divergence in performance between indices, but all remain in decent to great shape currently.

Bitcoin continues to act strongly, bouncing quickly from sell-offs in an overall uptrend. It has experienced a 17% decline from the recent high. Such pullbacks occur almost too frequently to count. Pullbacks over 20% are still highly common, and pullbacks during Bitcoin bull markets have averaged 27%.

Gold is right near the top of a multi-year range/inverse head and shoulders. The price has been stuck here for years. I don’t want to be the first one on, but it if breaks out it could be the start of a major uptrend.

The following chart shows themarket health indicatorsI track. They tell me the condition of the stock market overall, and whether it’s a good time to swing trade individual stocks.

Market health indicators are in good shape.

The Complete Method Stock Swing Trading Course covers my entire method of swing trading stocks. Now is a great time to review the material and prepare for the opportunities that are unfolding.

I don’t typically focus on Utility or Consumer Defensive stocks because they don’t move as much in good market conditions as the other sectors. In poor market conditions, these sectors hold up a bit better but are often still dropping.

Main sectors to watch: Technology, Communication Services, Healthcare, Financial, Real Estate.

The article, How to Scan for the Strongest Stocks in the Strongest Sectors covers how to find high-momentum stocks by looking at sector performance in Finviz, StockRover, StockFetcher, or StockCharts. It also shows you how to determine when money is flowing into or out of a sector.

I am deploying capital on long swing trades.

I also day trade stocks and the EURUSD. What I like about day trading is that I can trade every day. Whereas swing trading has periods of action and inaction.

Don’t want to have to analyze market conditions and pick individual stocks to trade? You can also passively invest. In my “long-term account,” I buy the same ETFs every month, regardless of market conditions. Buy and hold. Simple. It doesn’t make as much as swing trading or day trading, but it is much less work.

Disclaimer: Nothing in this article is personal investment advice, or advice to buy or sell anything. Trading is risky and can result in substantial losses, even more than deposited if using leverage.

  6. Sector Rotation: The author emphasizes the importance of sector analysis in identifying high-momentum stocks and sectors for swing trading. Sectors like Technology, Communication Services, Healthcare, Financials, and Real Estate are highlighted as areas of interest, while Utility and Consumer Defensive sectors are generally avoided due to their lower volatility.

  7. Day Trading: Contrasting with swing trading, day trading involves executing trades within the same trading day, capitalizing on intraday price movements. The article acknowledges the advantages of day trading, such as increased frequency of trading opportunities, but also notes the need for continuous market analysis.

  8. Passive Investing: The article briefly mentions passive investing as an alternative to active trading, where investors buy and hold ETFs regardless of market conditions. This strategy is characterized by its simplicity and long-term focus, offering a hands-off approach to portfolio management.

By incorporating these concepts into your trading strategy and staying attuned to market developments, you can enhance your ability to identify profitable trading opportunities and navigate various market environments effectively. Remember, trading involves inherent risks, and it's essential to conduct thorough research and exercise prudent risk management at all times.
